WHAT IS PETRA?

When Gertrude Bell arrived there in 1900, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its most visited tourist site. Petra became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985: “The Outstanding Universal Value of Petra resides in the vast extent of elaborate tomb and temple architecture … churches and other public buildings.” Petra is sometimes called the “Rose City.”
Nicole Kidman portrayed Gertrude Bell in the 2016 film “Queen of the Desert”. Although the film was a flop, Kidman got good reviews for her acting. “Letters from Baghdad”, a 2016 documentary, got much better reviews from the critics.
