Steak fajita seasoning is essential to creating authentic Mexican flavor in beef fajitas. Make this seasoning blend with 5 basic spices.

Who doesn’t love a plate of sizzling fajitas with grilled onions and peppers? Whether your favorite fajitas are chicken, shrimp, or steak, when you make them, you’ll want to use a blend of spices that will add the perfect flavor.

Generally speaking, there are some spices that pair better with certain proteins than with others. For example, Old Bay seasoning is fantastic on fish and seafood, but it doesn’t go as well with beef or pork.

Because of this, I think it’s smart to have different blends of fajita spices on hand. Next time you want to make chicken fajitas, be sure to use chicken fajitas seasoning, and the same goes for shrimp seasoning.

For steak fajitas, this recipe should be your go-to homemade spice blend.

In addition to the ingredients noted here, this recipe also includes crushed red pepper flakes, black pepper, and salt.

  • Chili Powder– If you’re wondering why chili powder is needed, it’s simply a matter of convenience. The spices in my homemade chili seasoning are the same spices I like to season fajita meat with.

By making or buying a premade chili powder blend, you can avoid having to measure out each spice individually.

  • Cumin– I don’t think I’ve ever had a Tex Mex or Mexican entree that didn’t have at least a dash of warm, earthy, citrus flavor to it. Those flavors come from cumin.

NOTE: If the blend of chili powder you use has cumin in it, you can omit adding any extra. I happen to love the flavor, so I add a touch more to the steak fajita seasoning blend.

Seasoning Blend FAQ

Do spices go bad?

Yes, after a year or so, dried spices lose the ability to add any significant flavor to food. For the longest shelf life, store your seasoning blends in airtight containers, and keep them a cool, dry location.

What’s the difference between taco seasoning and fajita seasoning?

Although ground beef tacos and steak fajitas have similar flavor profiles, there are a couple of differences in the spices used for each seasoning blend. Flavoring ground beef requires additional spices that you don’t need to add to a good cut of beef steak.

  4. Hey Kevin! As always homemade seasonings are SO much better! Flank steak here costs more than ribeye so I use ribeye in a lot of recipes. Fajitas are on the menu for one day this week as I just picked up steaks and we are still getting fresh peppers from the garden.
